Finance and customs <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cI work on two tracks that are closely related, yet very different in terms of activities,\u201d Barthol says. \u201cI started in financial administration, and in 2013, my colleague and I were asked if we also wanted to handle the customs clearance of containers. I took a course for this, and I\u2019ve been clearing containers myself since 2014.\u201d \n\nOn the financial side, Barthol mainly deals with the accounts payable side of dollar invoicing: invoices coming in from suppliers in Asia, linked to the sea containers en route from there. Then there\u2019s the import piece. Barthol explains: \u201cContact with shipping lines, forwarders, transporters, and suppliers, ensuring everything crosses the border through the ports without a hitch.\u201d \n\nBecause Barthol knows both sides of the process, he oversees the entire trajectory himself, from financial settlement to the border. This results in less noise between the links and ensures timely delivery for the customer. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Remote yet connected<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Barthol works from the office in Wijchen and travels to Oud-Beijerland about once a month. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to see colleagues in person, although the schedule is often too full to do it more often,\u201d he says. The department\u2019s daily stand-up usually happens via Teams. \u201cDistance is no barrier to collaboration. Staying involved with the head office has become much easier with the new Speak app. You used to walk around the office; now you see everything in the app, even if your colleague is in Italy. And what you don\u2019t catch through a screen, my manager fills in. That way, I stay perfectly informed, even from a distance.” <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Deepening the scope of duties <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\u201cThe growth of the company dictates what my work looks like,\u201d Barthol continues. \u201cMore volume means more work and more colleagues. Where there used to be two of us, there are now six. It means you deepen your own scope of duties rather than broadening it. You simply can\u2019t weigh in on everything anymore. I sometimes find that a pity, but on the other hand, it gives me satisfaction to focus fully on my own task. That also works to the customer\u2019s advantage: the better you know a specific part of the process, the sharper and more reliably you can execute it.\u201d <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Small team, big results<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBarthol works in Wijchen in a small team. According to him, this is pleasant and boosts productivity. \u201cThere\u2019s always room for a chat, but otherwise there are few distractions. You can do your work here in peace. You can move mountains!\u201d\nWhat Barthol enjoys most about the work is the variety. \u201cNo two days are the same, and the challenge lies in the small things\u2014a stuck container, an incorrect invoice. Things you wouldn\u2019t even mention if someone asked, but which ensure that at the end of the day you think: that was a good day after all.” \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
