The power of experience

When Arie had to apply for jobs again at the age of 56, he was frequently told that he had too much experience. According to him, this was a polite way of saying someone is too old… After several attempts, he ended up at Packit, where he was hired immediately.
“That says something about Packit,” Arie begins his story. “They do not hesitate to hire older staff. Or perhaps it is because I do not act like an old man at all.” Arie laughs. “I have a positive mindset and I really do not feel 63 yet. I exercise, I am fit, and I love puzzles.”

Brain teasers

Arie also solves puzzles at work. As an Assistant Supply Chain Planner, Arie forms an important link between suppliers, the warehouse, and the customer. “My work is a constant puzzle where I look for the right balance every day between when containers arrive, which ones have priority, what is in the warehouse, and what the customer expects from us. Furthermore, I ensure that all necessary forms are in order so that finances can be handled correctly and promptly. The goal is to complete the puzzle as efficiently as possible to avoid unnecessary costs.”

Precision

Arie started at Packit in 2018 as a Planner, and after a gap year, he returned to the same department in 2021, but in a supporting role. “I no longer do the planning,” Arie explains. “Packit has grown enormously in recent years in terms of products, suppliers, and locations. That means more administration. The puzzle is now a lot more complex. That is exactly what I enjoy doing.” Arie ensures that colleagues have the correct information so that the rest of the chain can continue without hitches.

He makes the comparison with a crossword puzzle. “If you make a mistake with the first word, you will never figure it out at the end. I am very meticulous and often notice mistakes in time. Because I am a big football fan, I often use this quote from Johan Cruijff at the office: Before you make a mistake, you should not make it.”

Moving with the times

“At 63, I may no longer be a pioneer leading the way when it comes to introducing new systems, but I keep up just fine. Packit is growing not only in size but also in professionalism. They invest in smart systems that make work even more efficient. For example, we have been working with Exact since 2025. For me personally, it is a victory that I dare to speak up and indicate that I need a bit more time to master some changes. In the past, I would just keep plowing through.”

Open culture

“That is the wisdom that comes with age,” Arie continues with a laugh. “But it is also the Packit organization that gives me the confidence to be open. We have a great team, but company-wide, all sorts of things are done to ensure we have a good time together. The pleasant Friday afternoon drinks, an evening at De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE!, or a weekend away: we lack for nothing here. We all work hard for the company. We dare to engage in dialogue with each other to keep improving ourselves, but above all, the Packit organization.”
